Abstract (EN)
Trauma is one of the major causes of death worldwide. Whereas traffic accidents are the major cause of death between the ages of 18-29 worldwide, in the United States trauma accounts for 10% of young adult deaths in both men and women. This study was performed by retrospectively evaluating paitients aged 18 yers and above who applied to the Emergency Department of Uludag University Hospital due to trauma between the dates 1st January 2011 and 1st December 2018. Cases' age, gender, type of trauma, date of admission to hospital (hour, day, month, year), mode of application, mode of transportation, blood pressure (systolic-diastolic), pulse, glaskow coma score, injury site, injury type, alcohol level, life span, place of death were recorded. 82,6% of the patients were male (n=271), 17,4% were female (n=57), and the median age was 46 (min-max=18-95) years. On examination of the patients' vital signs; median pulse was 80 beats per minute (min-max = 0-170), mean blood pressure 105/65 mmHg, median GCS 4 (min-max=3-15) and median life span 12 (min-max=1-4450) hours. The most cause of application was in-vehicle traffic accidents n =110 (33,5%) whereas the least cause was due to drowning n=1 (0,6%). The highest number of patient admission was in September n=44 (13,4%) and the lowest admission occured in December n = 19 (5,8%). Applications mostly occured at 13.00 hours n= 27 (8,2%). 18,9% of patients died in the emergency room, 74,6% in intensive care unit and 6,5% died in other places (operating room, clinic). Life expectancy was significantly lower in penetrating injuries compared to blunt injuries (p=0,043) and other injuries (p<0,001). Alcohol was significantly detected in 31,3% of motorcycle accident patients, 27,3% of firearm injuries and 18,1% of traffic accidents. While the hospitalization duration of multiple traumatized and multidisciplinary approach patients is getting longer; their morbidity and mortality ratio is increasing. While the rate of disabled patients is reduced due to trauma, survival of patients can be improved by establishing trauma centers and by forming collaborative trauma teams in line with our country's health policies and modern era.
