Abstract (EN)

In this study, possibilities of preparation of carnallite (MgCl2.KCl.6H2O) were investigated by using chromite beneficiation plant tailings. Aladağ/Adana area which has to important potential of chromite in Turkey was chosen as studying area. Firstly, laboratory scale high intensity wet magnetic separator was used for removing the magnetic materials such as chromite, ferrous minerals and manganous minerals in chromite ore beneficiation plant tailings. After the magnetic separation, hydrometallurgical recovery began with leaching of magnesium by hydrochloric acid (HCl). Amorphous quartz particles and other solids, which cannot be dissolved, were separated by filtration from the leach solution. Amorphous quartz with 96.5% SiO2 and 84.38% yield was obtained by additional magnetic separation tests applied to leach residuals.Impurities of the solution were precipitated by adjusting pH of the solution with magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) and removed by filtration. Finally, The pure magnesium chloride (MgCl2) solution obtained was mixed with potassium hydroxide (KOH) at stoichiometric ratio. According to XRD Diagram, synthetic carnallite was synthesized by evaporating the final solution. Key Words: Carnallite, Magnesium Chloride Solution, Chromite Ore Beneficiation Plant Tailings, Amorphous Quartz
