Analysis of poverty in Adana: A research with limited dependent variables

Poverty is one of the most important social and economic problems people have faced. Removing the poverty being seen as the basic aim of the social welfare and economic development caused poverty to become one of the important issues. So, poverty issue has started to get a special place in literature.When poverty is wished to be decreased or politics being applied about the poor is wished to be measured if they have reached their goals or not, it is impossible to develop any policy about who are poor, size and compositions of the poor households, in which situations the poverty risk increases or decreases. In this sense, determining about dimension and determinants of poverty constitute the purpose of the study.The study includes five sections. In the first section; the definitions of poverty, reasons of poverty and methods intended for measure of poverty are analyzed. In the second section, applied qualitative choice and limited dependent variables models are written to estimate determination of poverty. In the third section, methods and material used in the study are written. In the fourth section, studies about poverty in the literature are present. In the last section, evidence about measurement and determinants of poverty in Seyhan and Yüreğir district centers of Adana city are obtained.Keywords: Poverty, Equivalence Scale, Binary Choice, Limited Dependent Variables Models, Tobit Model
