Original interpretations of Adana Grand Mosque mihrab ornamentation using collage technique

Every society has its own unique culture, aesthetic understanding, and symbolism. Societies are influenced by the culture of the region they inhabit and develop their own understandings. This understanding is reflected in art, as in every field. Architectural structures hold artistic and functional significance. Construction of the Adana Grand Mosque, a prominent structure from the Beyliks Period, was begun in 1513 by Ramazanoğlu Halil Bey and opened for worship by his son Piri Mehmet Pasha in 1541. The structure demonstrates the influence of Mamluk, Seljuk, and Ottoman artistic styles. This influence is also evident in the mihrab. The mihrab is notable for its rich decorative features in diverse styles. Despite this, no detailed study has been found on this subject, and therefore, the Adana Ulu Mosque mihrab was examined. Stonework, tile, calligraphy, and hand-carved techniques were used in the mihrab's decorations. The mihrab design incorporates vegetal, animal, geometric, and symbolic motifs, as well as inscriptions. This study examines the architectural style, technical structure, materials, colors, motifs, and pattern characteristics of the Adana Ulu Mosque mihrab. The study comprises a literature review, field research, oral interviews, and practical application phases. The designs created during the application phase were created through a unique collage interpretation of traditional Turkish art-based mihrab ornamentation. A total of 15 designs, each measuring 20 cm x 30 cm, were created, each focusing on a different section of the mihrab.
