Özet (EN)
Aim: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different exercise methods, namely Schroth exercises and Breathing Exercises, on spirometric parameters in individuals diagnosed with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS). Materials and Methods: Schroth and Breathing Exercises were applied to a total of 48 patients in the 10-17 age group who were diagnosed with AIS with follow-up at the Fizyolif Physiotherapy Consultancy Center. The sample was divided into two groups; the Schroth Exercises group and the Breathing Exercises group. Data related to respiratory parameters were recorded using the FirstMed SP-10 spirometer in two stages, before treatment and at the end of the third week of Schroth/Breathing exercise treatment. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Windows Version 22.0 was used for data analysis. Results: A significant increase in FVC (%), FEV1(%), FEV1/FVC (%), FEF25-75 (L), and PEFR (%) parameters was observed in all cases in both groups (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in the final measurements of FEV1(%), FEF25-75 (L), and PEFR (%) between both exercise groups (p>0.05). However, the FVC (%) post exercise values were higher in the group that underwent Schroth Exercises. In contrast, the FEV1/FVC (%) final measurement values were higher in the group that underwent Breathing Exercises (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study demonstrates a positive effect of both Schroth and Breathing Exercises on spirometric parameters in the short term. The FVC post exercise values were found to be higher in the group that underwent Schroth Exercises compared to the Breathing Exercise group. However, no significant difference was observed between the Schroth and Respiratory exercise groups in terms of final measurement values for FEV1, FEF25-75, and PEFR. The exercises have a beneficial impact on spirometric parameters and respiratory functions. The increase in the FVC parameter suggests that Schroth Exercises may be effective in improving lung functions.
