Social functions of thirty legends selected from narrated and written ones in the vicinity of Afyonkarahisar have been determined. Legends have been examined through the methods of William Bascom and Paul Magnarella, who are known to be loyal to the methods of functional folklore theory, and also through the Professor Bilge Seyidoğlu's method based on the socialized aspect of legend which was applied in his doctoral thesis. William Bascom has categorised the functions of folklore products into these categories: 1. Entertainment 2. Education 3. Handing down of the culture to new generations 4. Escape Professor Paul Magnarella has determined four major functions in the Function Theory. 1. Psychological 2. Creational-Prophecy 3. Institutional 4. Practical (Functional) Professor Bilge Seyidoğlu has pointed out those legends 1. set down traditions and conserve them, 2. guide the society, 3. bring in meaning to the place they are formed 4. have protective and healing effects As a result of the research study, the fact that legends have some certain functions in the society that they are formed has been established.
