Abstract (EN)

Gerevī is the author of Ḥāshiyat Saʿdillāh al-Ṣaghīr, a work that continues to be used as a supplementary textbook in many madrasas across the Islamic world. Distinguished by his unique approach within the classical Arabic linguistic and grammatical tradition, Gerevī occupies a distinguished position among linguists. What particularly sets him apart is his comprehensive commentary written on the commentary of Saʿdullāh al-Bardaʿī's famous work al-ʿAwāmil alMiʾa. This ḥāshiya is not merely a work devoted to explaining words and expressions; rather, it delves deeply into linguistic issues, analyzes grammatical debates in a comparative manner, and offers original interpretations. Gerevī does not content himself with passively transmitting the differing opinions of earlier linguists; instead, he subjects these views to critical examination and clearly states his own position on many issues. In this respect, he transcends the conventional boundaries of the classical commentary tradition, presenting himself as a linguist who reinterprets texts through an analytical and critical lens. Gerevī's scholarly methodology reflects a commitment not to blind adherence to traditional authorities but to rational inquiry and linguistic coherence. The linguistic discussions addressed in Ḥāshiyat Saʿdillāh al-Ṣaghīr clearly demonstrate his profound expertise in grammatical analysis. The author does not hesitate to challenge the opinions of earlier grammarians when necessary, thereby manifesting his intellectual independence. Moreover, his extensive use of the Qur'an, Prophetic traditions, and classical Arabic poetry to substantiate his arguments reveals both his deep mastery of the classical sources and his strength in linguistic reasoning. Ultimately, Gerevī's work should be regarded not merely as an explanatory text on Arabic grammar but also as a significant scholarly contribution to the broader intellectual discourse of linguistic philosophy in the Arabic tradition.
