Word groups within the literary work of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar's "The Dreams of Abdullah Efendi"

Literature depends on language. The feelings, thoughts and dreams created by poems, stories, theatre and novels owe their existence to words. Thousands of words, expressions and phrases take place in a language. Literature reflects the feelings and views more strongly than daily language. The words that men of letters choose, the way they bring those words together and the sentences they form are the factors that make them immortal and special compared to other language users. In that regard, this study analyses word groups of the well-known story "The Dreams of Abdullah Efendi" of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, who is an influential user of language and places the words skilfully in his literary works. The main objective of the study is to reveal the features of word groups in Turkish syntax via examination of the story. Word groups constitute the most comprehensive and detailed aspect of syntax. For this reason, word groups within Turkish as spoken in Turkey are analysed in detail as part of that study. The study consist of three chapters; "Introduction", "Word Groups in Turkish as Spoken in Turkey" and "Analysis". In the chapter of "Introduction", the author's life, literary personality and major works are addressed. In "Word Groups in Turkish as Spoken in Turkey", the descriptions, explanations and classifications of researchers regarding word groups are indicated and some of the explanations and classifications are compared with each other. The study is based on a specific classification within the scope of the comparisons. In "Analysis" the sentences and word groups are screened in the story, "The Dreams of Abdullah Efendi". The analysis is shaped under three main titles. In the first section structural features of word groups are determined; in the second section the way how the word groups are applied to other word groups' structures is evaluated and in the last section the word groups are examined according to the tasks they do in the sentences.
