Abstract (EN)
For urban transportation systems to operate effectively, investments must be made accurately and in a timely manner, and traffic regulations should be implemented in accordance with sustainability principles. Sustainability in traffic refers to the implementation of transportation policies that not only protect the environment but also provide long-term economic and social benefits. In this context, minimizing environmental impacts and integrating innovative technologies play a critical role in the development of transportation policies. In this study, the Gürcükapı and Taşhan intersections, located on major arterial corridors in the city center of Erzurum, were examined. Five different scenarios were developed for these intersections: Scenario 1 represents the existing conditions; Scenario 2 involves geometric improvement of the existing layout and modification of the intersection model; Scenario 3 includes the geometric improvement and intersection model modification applied in Scenario 2, with the addition of signal timing at the Taşhan Intersection; Scenario 4 consists of geometric improvement, modification of the intersection model, and reversal of traffic direction on Ayaz Paşa Street; and Scenario 5 combines geometric improvement and reversal of Ayaz Paşa Street with the addition of signal timing at the Taşhan Intersection. The alternative design scenarios were prepared using AutoCAD, and the generated layouts were modeled in the Aimsun traffic simulation software. During the modeling process, the urban environment was also represented using the SketchUp 3D program. Based on the GEH analysis results obtained from Aimsun, Scenario 2—characterized by the modification and geometric improvement of the intersection model—yielded the most favorable performance indicators, with a delay time of 156.69 s/km, an average queue length of 83.16 vehicles, a waiting time of 137.03 s/km, and a travel time of 238.42 s/km. Furthermore, according to the GEH-based emission analysis, Scenario 2 also produced the lowest instantaneous emission values, with CO₂ emissions of 81.37 (g×10,000), NOₓ emissions of 116.76 (g×10), and VOC emissions of 180.70 (g×10), indicating superior environmental performance compared to the other scenarios.
