Reflections of academics'multiple professional roles on their work and private life

This research aims to determine the reflections of academicians' multiple professional roles on their work and private lives. It was carried out with the participation of 12 faculty members with different titles working at Kütahya Health Sciences University Faculty of Medicine. A semi-structured interview technique obtained the research data. The data obtained from the interviews were subjected to content analysis. According to the research results, it has been determined that the academic profession is defined as a profession with responsibilities that must be fulfilled based on certain principles. In addition, it has been concluded that due to the nature of the profession, there are excess roles and that role conflicts occur from time to time. As a result of the research, it has been determined that social reputation, career opportunities, travel opportunities, meeting new people, self-development, and being a role model support professional roles; while budget insufficiency, extra administrative duties, insufficiency of physical facilities, hierarchical obstacles, and factors originating from the nature of professional roles restrict roles. It is also among the findings that the negativities that academics encounter while fulfilling their professional roles cause various physical and psychological effects. It has been determined that time management is important in ensuring work-life balance and that academics develop various strategies such as family support, friend support, disciplined work, devotion, and spending time on hobbies in order to manage the process effectively and cope with negativities. In light of the findings, various suggestions have been presented for researchers and practitioners.
