Agricultural geography of an Akdeniz province (Mersin)

Akdeniz district is the fourth largest district among 13 districts in terms of Mersin province in terms of population located in The Mediterranean region. Akdeniz district has Tarsus tothe East, Toros's to the North, Yenişehir to the West and the Mediterranean to the South. Akdeniz district has an important place in agricultural production and especially in vegetable and fruit agriculture. It is possible to say that the Akdeniz district is an agricultural area without making any distiction between cities and villages. In the field of research, where more treditional agricultural methods were applied until the 1960's. Developing Technologies after the 1960's, agricultural strugies, seed breeding, especiallywith the use of plastic as green house material, agricultural production has shown a rapid development. Accompained by the application of modern agricultural methods. Akdeniz district is rich in fertile soils, has a temperate climate, water resources are sufficient. These elements are effective in the advancement of the agricultural field in the Akdeniz district. Thanks to the temperate climate observed at the searching sector, a large number of agricultural crops are grown. Fruit growing, especially vegetable growing beside olive cultivation, husbandry and other agriculture of field crops, improving lately. As a result, in this dissertation work, agricultural activities of Akdeniz district have been evaluated with a geographical approach. Physical and human factors affecting the agricultural activities of the Akdeniz district were examined. The effect of geographical elements on production was evaluated by cause and effect relationship and the agricultural potential of the Akdeniz district was tried to emerge.
