Abstract (EN)

Purpose: Wheze commonly occurs in small children . It is a musical sound, occurring due to bronchospasm, mucosal edema, and increased secretions; and continues throuHGout the expirium. Wheeze is reported to recur in infants with wheeze attacks and in children, who had not been treated due to lack of definitivie diagnosis. Since the predictive tests and symptoms at this age group are not specific, it is difficult to discriminate a wheeze attack as temporary or permanent. Epidemiologic studies showed that children with a histroy of bronchiolitis develop wheeze and asthma. Children with low D vitamini levels tend to have more frequent upper airway tract infections and this relationship is more pronounced in asthmatics. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between metabolically linked laboratory parameters like calcium, D vitamini, and parathormone obtained during acute wheeze exacerbation. Material and methods: A total of 100 patients who presented to Recep Tayyip Erdogan University, School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics were included in this study. Study group consisted of 50 patients of ages 6 months-2 years, who presented with third wheeze attack. Control group consisted of 50 healthy children with no history of disease, at similar ages. Pre-study plasma D vitamini, parathormone, total blood count, and biochemical parameters were obtained from both groups. Results: This study found no difference in plasma D vitamini, or parathormone levels between groups. Total blood count revealed differences in platelet count (p=0.007), percentage of eosinophils (p=0.0453), neutrophil count (p=0.0099), and percentage of neutrophils (p=0.0008). Biochemical parameters were similar except plasma level of calcium (p=0.0001). Conclusion: AlthouHG some laboratory values may differ in patients presenting with 3 wheeze attacks, this may not adversely affect the clinical presentation. Concerning personal, environmental, and seasonal differences, it is hiHGly difficult to obtain a solid classification and clinical results. Therefore we propose that studies with shorter follow-up periods and more patients are needed.
