Relation between severity of poisoning, acute inflammatory markers and erythrocyte cholinesterase level in acute pesticide poisonings

Abstract (EN)

Purpose: Knowledge on acute inflammatory response in organophosphate poisonings are based on limited publications and case reports. In our study, we aimed to explore whether there is a relation between erythrocyte cholinesterase and acute inflammatory markers in organophosphate poisonings, and the impact of such relation on organ damage.Materials and Methods: 39 patients who were admitted to emergency department in the last two years due to organic phosphate poisoning were included to the study, which was carried out prospectively. Their ages, genders, durations of hospital stay and ventilator support needs were recorded, and it was evaluated whether there was a statistical connection between the clinic and acute inflammatory criteria and the erythrocyte cholinesterase level of the patients, which were taken during their application to the hospital.Findings: The average erythrocyte cholinesterase level of the patients was 15,37±6,97 U/grHb. The mortality rate was % 12,8. When the erythrocyte cholinesterase and serum cholinesterase level was evaluated with fibrinogen, a statistically significant relation was found. A significant connection was detected between interleukin-1, one of the acute inflammatory markers, and serum cholinesterase level. No relation was detected between the erythrocyte cholinesterase level and cytokine levels of patients who deceased and patients who survived.Conclusion: In our study, the serum cholinesterase level of the patients who deceased was lower, when compared to the patients who survived. While a significant relation was found between the erythrocyte cholinesterase level of the patients and fibrinogen, no significant relation was found between other cytokines.
