Evaluation of the effectiveness of using a patient handover guide in the process of postoperative patient handover to the intensive care unit

Purpose: The study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of using the patient handover guide in the process of handing over patients to the intensive care unit after surgery. Materials and methods: This descriptive and prospective study was conducted with 82 nurses who agreed to participate in the study, after obtaining ethics committee approval and institutional permission, between 15.07.2023 and 01.02.2024, in designated intensive care units with high post-operative patient admission potential at Bursa City Hospital. has been made. Data collection tools created by the researcher and approved by expert opinion were used. After the data collection process was completed, the data was analyzed with SPSS 24.0 and the results were evaluated at a 95% confidence level. Descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation were calculated in the study. Chi-square test of independence and cross-tabulation comparison were used. Results: It was determined that 60% of the nurses were female, 22% were male, and the average age was 28.04±2.627. 74% of nurses have a bachelor's degree, 61% have worked in the profession for 1-5 years, while 58.5% have worked in intensive care for 4 years or more. Nurses stated that they wanted to use the guide in the delivery process at a rate of 65.9%. Significant differences were found between nurses' satisfaction levels with guide use according to some sociodemographic characteristics. The average delivery time under guideline guidance was found to be 115.48 seconds (≈1.92446 minutes). Result: Nurses stated that they wanted to use the patient handover guide in the handover process. There are significant relationships between guideline usage satisfaction levels and nurses' sociodemographic characteristics. Key Words: Intensive care, surgery, patient handover, guide, nurse
