Ill THE EVALUATION OF MODERN TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS WITHIN THE TRANSPORTATION POLICY AND GEOLOGICAL FACTORS BETWEEN ANKARA AND ISTANBUL (M.Sc. Thesis) Suay KARAMAN GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY JULY 2002 ABSTRACT There is a huge blunder and out of period applications in transportation matter in Turkey, like many other issues. Since 1950, highways have been located within active fault zones and fertile farm lands where major geotechnical problems prevail. In the last 50 years, by having an out of science of transportation policies and as a result of insistent highway approach, transportation systems have been considered each others rivals. On the other hand, various transportation systems are not each other's rivals but complementaries. As just opposite of all developed countries, the usage of railway and marine lines were being decreased from 40% to 5% while the usage of highway has been increased to 95% in transportation. Individual transportation which was dependent to abroad in 90% in construction and administration point of view and increased the consumption, has had the highest priority. Mass transportation has been destroyed consciously. Especially in urban areas, motor vehicles have been turned to the dominant ones.IV Transportation between Ankara and Istanbul is a typical example of such problems. Whereas the solution was having the high speed train project in use before the motorway. Besides, it is still not too late to take an action. A decade ago, the ones who had established a railway project, and these were the ones who had the licence of mine of their own on the same location, put back the similar project again by motorways in the following decade. By having stopped the comforted and safe high-speed train that was supposedly going to take the distance between Ankara and Istanbul within 1,5 hours, some has accepted all abroad- dependent and highly risky 5 hours driving timed motorway project They have been the leaders of a group making possible our resources to go out of the country. Furthermore, while this project had to be established on through 2000 years' Silk Road, it has been extended with an additional 60 km on through North Anatolian Fault as 250 km in total. It is undeniable to make up the national solutions determined by modem transportation policies and strategies.
