Analysis of the green area system of ankara metropolitian

Ankara, one of the oldest cities of Anatolia, was rapidly urbanised after being the capital.For the healthy development of Ankara a different city planning study was applied.Planned development of Ankara turned to be a major metropolitan of Turkey. Increasedpopulation in Ankara brought the settlement problems caused by the unbalanceddistribution between the settlements and green areas.Parallel to the increase in the population, it was started to increase insufficient greenareas by various projects in 1990s. Between 1990 and 2000, the green area ratio to thepopulation was not changed, but in the next term, between 2000 and 2006, significantimprovement was achived and the green area ratio per person has reached more than 7m2/person, which is suggested by the act of construction.In this study, the current situation of the green areas of Ankara metropolitan wasobtained. In this context, the towns of the metropolitan area were selected. The greenareas of the towns were compared and analysed by considering the population of thetowns. In a tabular form, the whole green areas of the metropolitan were investigated andthe green area per person was computed.Besides, the changes in the amounts of both the green areas and the settlements for thelast 15 years were analysed by using the satellite images in different terms. The resultswere integrated with the geographical information system (GIS). For this purpose, theimage enhancement and classification techniques were applied to Landsat MSS (1990)and Landsat TM (2000) multi-spectral images. Land use/land cover (LULC) informationwas derived from all the image sets using remote sensing (RS) and analyzed with GIS.The change of the LULC in this term was investigated by giving the priority to the greenareas.Keywords: urban green areas, remote sensing, geographical information system, Ankara
