Ornamental characteristics of illuminated manuscript in Ankara Foundation Art Museum

The aims of this study are to examine the illuminated works exhibited at the Ankara Museum of Foundational Arts, in terms of technical properties, motif, color, composition and stylistic features, and to identify these studies by way of drawings in order to create a document. This is a descriptive study based on the illuminated manuscripts of Quran, charters of foundations, Şerh-uş Şifa and Delail-ul Hayrat which are exhibited in the museum.The population of the study is consisted of the "illuminated books" which are exhibited or stored in Ankara Museum of Foundational Arts. The sampling of the study is consisted of the 28 illuminated works in Ankara Museum of Foundational Arts. This study used qualitative research methods. The data, obtained from written documents throughout various libraries.In the 4th part of the study which consists of results and interpretations we created tables to present the data obtained from photographs taken by ourselves, measuring, drawings and decorative features of illuminations recorded by us. The 28 illuminated works including 1 Delail-ul Hayrat, 1 Şifayi Şerif, 1 Şerh-üş Şifa, 1 masnavi, 9 Quran and 15 charters of foundation were examined in terms of ornamentation properties. In the fifth part of the study we presented the findings and results, and our recommendations based on these results.In our study, we observed that the penç motifs were used most frequently and then tığ (crochet), rumi and hatai motifs respectively and hook and vase motifs were used less frequently. We also detected that gold and dark blue colors were used most frequently and grey, purple and brown colors were used at the least.
