Drama types in Ancient Period and their description on vases

Since their early existence, human beings have started to produce pottery-type ceramic articles to meet their daily needs of life. As time went by, these articles were replaced with ceramics of different kinds which responded to artistic and aesthetic conserns as well. This latter category of ceramics has developed both in form and in ornamentation. From past to present, the art of ceramics has evolved through many stages, exhibiting a definite long-term pattern of development. This pattern can be examined in terms of technical issues and ornamentation. In addition to the ceramics of high artistic value, the ceramics used to meet the daily needs of life continued to be popular in the period of our investigation. It is also possible to observe the descriptions of various theater scenes on vases made in that period by the red and black technique, reflecting the stylistic characteristics of Greek vase painting. Ancient Greek vase painters depicted not only mythological and daily life scenes, but also scenes taken from the art of drama on their works in a very detailed manner. The concept of "theater" embodies historical, physical and artistic features together with structural elements. In addition to being the building where the public come together and participate in social activities, the aesthetic aspect of the theaters has always been at the forefront, architectural and ornamenational elements of artistic quality in theaters indicate their difference from other buildings. Theaters were not the places where only plays and festive competitions are performed; they were places where places where people gather and socialize. This feature of the theater is associated with that of the agora. The aim of the present thesis is to offer an extensive study of theatrical description on the vases made by the red and black figüre technique, combining typological, material, formal and contextual aspects of these Works of art. The time span convered by that study starts from the early years of implementation of black figüre technique and ends with the Roman period.
