The investigation of oxidant / antioxidant status and oxidative DNA damage in patients with aortic valve sclerosis

Aortic valve sclerosis (ACS) is defined as thickening and calcification of the aortic valve, although there is no restriction in aortic valve movements. In this study, we aimed to measure serum thiol/disulfide homeostasis, total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS) and 8-OH deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels of patients with ACS and to investigate whether they are associated with disease severity. 40 patients with ACS and 40 healthy individuals were included in the study. In the ACS group, TAS, TOS, OSI, Nthiol, Thiol, disulfide, disulfide/Nthiol, disulfide/Thiol and 8-OHdG levels were found to be significantly lower than the control group. However, Ntiol/Thiol levels were found statistically higher than the control group. In conclusion, our results suggest that increased oxidant stress may be an important point in the onset and progression of aortic valve sclerosis. Therefore, adding antioxidants to treatment can shed light on new therapeutic targets for thiol/disulfide balance, slowing or even stopping aortic valve stenosis.
