Özet (EN)

The primarily aim of this study is to manifest the relationship betweenhuman reason and sense, which dwells on our minds throughout the historyof thought, by considering the philosophy of Aristotle in epistemological andethical way. In this frame, firstly we made an introduction by placing a generalview of the philosophers? approaches to these two concepts. In the secondchapter, the considerations of philosopher are presented; what kind ofmeanings he put on to these two concepts, how he related them each other,in which areas he placed them. Conversely to the approaches, in whichreason and sense are accepted as identical by degrading them to each other,Aristotle?s explanations about the reasons why it is hard to ostracize them bydefining them independently and the reasons why they are not identical, arearranged. In the third chapter, because the philosopher thinks the reason and thesense as the two skills of the soul, the understanding of soul is discussed byconsidering the body and soul as whole. The two skills of soul; reason andsense are discussed around the considerations of Aristotle about soul andbody. Reason and sense are taken into consideration separately for herbal, animal and human part of soul. Later the skills of those there parts of the soulare examined in the same logical way. The directly related themes to thisthesis, such as the sides of the soul which have reason and which does nothave reason are also analyzed in this chapter. Besides, because of theseverity of the reason in Aristotle?s ideas, the theoretical reason and thepractical reason are analyzed in details under two headlines. In the forth chapter, the relationship between reason and sensediscussed ethically; first, virtue, that composes the skeleton of Aristotle?sphilosophy of ethics, is described, then by expressing their types separately, the virtues of reason and the virtues of character are analyzed in the directionof this thesis. Later, we discuss the desire problem, in which reason andsense, and the conflict and the harmony between them can be analyzedintensively. This subject is discussed around Aristotle?s descriptions of ?thehuman, prevails over himself? and ?the human, who can not prevail overhimself?. Besides, under this headline we discuss Aristotle?s ideascorresponding to the selection and responsibility, those can not be thoughtapart from the descriptions mentioned above, and by his segregations aboutthe human activities. Under the last headline of this chapter, we also describehis ideas about happiness, which he shows as a target and that can only bereached by behavior which is adequate to his essence, and by virtue, as aresult of harmonious activities of sense and reason. The vital importance ofreason and sense to reach happiness is tried to be explained. After the relationship between reason and sense is set up according toAristotle?s ideas in the chapters mentioned above, and when the astonishingresults, that show great similarities between today?s conditions and thoseideas mostly turn around the human psychology, are taken into consideration, the necessity to analyze the philosophy of the first periods by relating theapproaches in today?s science of psychology is inevitably appeared. This isthe subject analyzed in the fifht chapter. In conclusion, by a general evaluation, the outline of this subject isanalyzed and the main point of this study is emphasized, finally byexpression of the results, the study is completed.
