Reconstruction of Gjirokastër (Ergiri) province in Ottoman Period

enter under Ottoman rule, to 1912, when Albania become free. At the end of the research have found there were 240 building in Gjirokastër province. But just 69 of them had survived. Among these survived buildings there are 19 mausoleum, 16 bridge, 14 fountain, 5 mosque, 5 pieces of aquaduct, 3 castle, 2 treadmill, 1 dervish lodge, 1 bazaar, 1 outpost, 1 bath and 1 clock tower. In time, Albania become a witness of too many wars, that have destructive effects on these buildings. For example I. and II. World War and also Balkan Wars caused to destruction of most of these buildings. After these wars Albania managed with communism for 40 years. In this period some of survived buildings become wrack and some of them used for another purposes like warehouse or armory. In Gjirokastër territory there are 171 building which can not survive. Among these buildings there are 42 dervish lodge, 34 school, 31 mosque, 16 mausoleum, 18 trading building (13 inn, 5 bazaar, 1 fairground), 11 bridge, 5 goverment office, 4 prison, 2 fountain, 2 bath, 1 court, 1 telegraph office, 1 library, 1 police office, 1 longing building and 1 city hall. In addition there are projects that we don't know if they put into practice. These are: dormitory for militarypolice in Pogun, Policeman dormitory in Himara, goverment office in Himara, mosque in Mecidgoran, prison for womens in Tepedelen, barracks and hospital in Gjirokastër. Till today a catalog of all buildings that built in Ottoman period in Albania have not done yet. When this thesis had started, we noticed that we had not got enough time and money to catalogize all of these buildings. Because of this we limited thesis subject with Gjirokastër province which present us a great variety of building types. With this thesis whole buildings in this province were documented and evaluated.
