Mardin is Artuqids period

Mardin is a city that attracts attention with its cosmopolitan structure and city identity. The aim of this thesis is to reveal the process of the identity of the city in the historical process and the formation of the identity which has in the 21st century. When we look through the history of Mardin, it is seen that the turning point for the city was accompanied by the transition to Artuqid. Because Mardin, along with the Artuqids began to urbanize by exiting the top zone of its classical military identity. Mardin was used as a settlement since the antiquity of the Al-Algerian region, where it was located, because of its fertile soil and its migration routes. The civilizations such as Hittites, Babillier and Assyrians dominated the city. In later periods, the city was the scene of the struggles of the two great powers of the Middle Ages, the Roman Empire and the Sassanid State, in order to dominate each other. Because Mardin was a buffer zone between these two forces. With the empowerment of the Islamic State in the 7th century, the Islamic armies began raids outside Arabia. The armies of Islam, which were based on the Al-Jazeera region, conquered the city. With this period, the city began to Islamize. After the political activities of the Great Seljuk State and the victory of Malazgirt, the Turkish population began to increase. In the end, Necmeddin Ilgazi conquered Mardin and founded the Mardin Artucids State. This was a turning point in the history of the city. Mardin experienced great developments in the economic and architectural fields under the rule of Artuklu. The city has gained economic prosperity. In addition, the social relations were ensured in the city with the policies of tolerance of the Artuqid rulers. With the architectural works built by the rulers, the city was flourished. During this period, Mardin also developed in scientific and cultural fields and became a center of attraction for scientists. During the Artukid period, the city experienced its most brilliant period and the city developed in every sense and became an important center of the Middle Ages.
