ABSTRACT PhD. Thesis STRUCTURE-PROPERTY RELATION IN GRAFT COPOLYMERS Mehmet Mürşit TEMÜZ Fırat University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciencies Department of Chemistry 2003, Page:79 In this study, powder cellulose was grafted by using two different methods, with some vinyl monomers, which are of them was free radical graft copolymerization. In the former, primary OH groups in powder cellulose were first transformed to ester groups with methacryloylchloride. This cellulose methacrylate was grafted with 4- acrylomorpholine (AcM), 2-methacrylamidopyridine (MAP) and methacrylamidobenzene (MAB) which were obtained from the reaction of methacyloylchloride with corresponding aromatic amines, in presence of AIBN in acetonitrile as solvent. In the last, atom transfer radical graft copolymerization, primary OH groups of powder cellulose was first reacted with chloroacetylchloride. Then by using cellulose with chloroacetyl group as macroinitiator, it was graft with styrene (Sty), methyl methacrylate (MMA), AcM and methacrylamide (MAm) in the presence of CuBr/l,2-dipiperidinoethane as catalyst system. Atom transfer radical polimerization (ATRP) technique was also used in grafting of poly(styrene-co-p-chloromethyl styrene) with ethyl methacrylate (EMA) in the presence of CuCl/l,2-dipiperidinoethane as catalyst system. Chloromethyl groups in the copolymer were effective as initiator in ATRP technique. Some graft copolymers of poly(styrene-co-p-chloromethyl styrene) with mixture of AcM and MMA were prepared in the presence of CuBr/l,2-dipiperidinoethane at low conversions (< 15 %). The monomer reactivity ratios of graft copolymerization were calculated by using Kelen-Tudos (KT), Finemann-Ross (FR), Inverted Finemann-Ross (IFR), Yezrielev- Brokhina-Roskin (YBR), Extended Kelen-Tudos (EKT), and Mayo-Lewis (ML) methods. The graft copolymers were characterized by elementel analysis, IR, *H and ^C-NMR techniques. Thermal stabilities and thermal transition temperatures of all the graft copolymers were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In addition, dye, water and metal ion uptake properties of graft copolymers obtained from cellulose were determined, and the results were discussed.
