Assessment of nurses knowledge towards bariatric surgery at surgical wards at teaching hospitals in babil city

Background: Bariatric surgery is the most effective method in the treatment of severe obesity and related disorders. Despite the significant increase in the number of bariatric surgery worldwide, including in Iraq, bariatric surgery is a modern method for nurses, so nurses must be very knowledgeable to provide high-quality nursing care to patients, reduce complications and support surgeons. Objective: To assess the level of nurses' knowledge about bariatric surgery. To find the relationship between nurses' knowledge about bariatric surgery and their demographic and occupational characteristics (age, gender, level of education, and years of experience). Methods: A descriptive and analytical study was conducted on the knowledge of nurses on bariatric surgery in the surgical wards of the teaching hospitals (Al-Hilla Surgery Training Hospital and Al-Imam Al-Sadik Hospital) in the city of Babylon. The duration of this study lasted between 1/10/2021 and 15/5/2022. The improbable (intentional) sample consisted of (100) nurses working in surgical wards. Results: The results of this study showed that 75% of the nurses had high knowledge of bariatric surgery and 30% had moderate knowledge, and that there was no significant relationship between nurses' knowledge of bariatric surgery and their demographic characteristics, except for years of experience. Conclusion: In this study, it was concluded that nurses have good knowledge about bariatric surgery.
