Evaluation of the omentum levels in asthmatic patients

The evaluation of omentin levels in patients with asthma Introduction: Asthma is heterogeneous disease which frequently characterized by chronic airway inflammation. Although it is a multifactorial disease process associated with genetic, allergic, environmental, infectious, emotional, and nutritional components, the ethiopathogenesis of asthma has not been clarified yet. Adipose tissue that seen a depot for triglycerides or a source of free fatty acids, nowadays, is recognized as an important part of the energy metabolism with secreting many enzymes, cytokines, hormones and growth factors. Active mediators which is released from white adipose tissue is called adipokines that play a role in many physiological process such as nutrition, appetite, energy balance, insulin and glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, regulation of blood pressure, vascular remodeling, coagulation and inflammation. In recent years , there are studies showing that adipokines are associated with many inflammatory and immunological diseases. And also, omentin is one of these adipokines that has anti inflammatory properties has been studied in many diseases. In our knowledge there are no published studies on the relationship between asthma and serum omentin levels. In this study, we aimed to investigate serum omentin levels in patients with asthma and the relationship between omentin levels and severity of asthma, atopy, respiratory function tests and BMI. Material method: 47 patients with asthma and 39 healthy adults were included in this study. Patients with significant chronic airway disease (COPD, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease) and / or chronic systemic disease (diabetes mellitus, liver failure, kidney failure, heart failure, cerebrovascular disease) and patients under the age of eighteen were excluded from the study. In addition of the routine tests of the patients, serum omentin levels were determined by Elisa method with Human Elisa Kit. Statistical analysis of the study was performed with SPSS 16.0 statistical analysis package program and p<0.05 was considered as significant. Results: In this study, serum omentin levels of patients with asthma (107.0 ± 23.7 pg / mL) was significantly higher (p = 0.028) when compared with healthy controls (84.0 ± 44.2 pg/mL). There were statistically significant difference in serum omentin levels between groups of asthma patients according to the classification of asthma severity (p=0.008). Between the groups of patients with asthma, serum levels of omentin in mild persistant group was significantly higher when compared with moderate persistant group (p=0.021). Serum omentin levels in female patients were significantly higher than male patients (p = 0.047). In control group, serum omentin levels of non-smokers were significantly higher when compared with smokers (p = 0.005). In control group, serum omentin levels were significantly higher in female patients than male patients (p= 0.000). There was negative correlation between omentin and BMI in male patients with asthma (p= 0.040, r=-0.599 ) and female patients with healthy controls (p=0.008, r=-0.484). Conclusion: Serum omentin levels were significantly higher in patients with asthma when compared with healthy controls.According to the classification of asthma severity, serum levels of omentin in mild persistant group was significantly higher than moderate persistant group. Due to the our study was the first investigation that evaluating serum omentin leves of the patients with asthma in the literature, large prospective studies are required to better elucidate the role played by omentine in disease processes.
