Abstract (EN)

This master's thesis aims to examine the reflections of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedia, a significant work of middle age Italian literature, in European painting. The research analyzes the illustrations of the Inferno section of the Divine Comedia by Sandro Botticelli, William Blake, and Salvador Dali. The thesis addresses the visual interpretations of Dante's epic poem by these three great artists and examines their artistic, historical, and cultural contexts. The research begins with information about Dante's life and the content of the Divine Comedy, followed by details about the lives and art of Botticelli, Blake, and Dali, and their processes of depicting the Inferno. The final section provides information on the 34 cantos of the Inferno and analyzes the artists' illustrations. Botticelli, as a Renaissance artist, visualized the Divine Comedia with detailed and symbolic narration. Blake, an 18th century English painter, interpreted it with a mystical and symbolic approach to art. Dali, a 20th century surrealist artist, brought a modern perspective to Dante's work. This research employs qualitative analysis. The qualitative analysis method has facilitated an in-depth examination of elements such as the symbols, themes, and artistic techniques in the artists' illustrations. With this method, how each artist interpreted and visually expressed Dante's text has been analyzed in detail. In conclusion, this thesis reveals that the Divine Comedia is not only a literary masterpiece but also has a significant impact through visual arts. Botticelli's classical lines, Blake's mystical imagery, and Dali's surrealist visions highlight the richness and diversity of the artistic interpretations of the Divine Comedia. This underscores how Dante's work has maintained its artistic value and influence over the centuries. Each artist has emphasized the versatility and depth of Dante's text by interpreting it through their own artistic visions, making lasting contributions to European painting. Additionally, this thesis demonstrates the strong connections and interactions between literature and visual arts, contributing to art historical literature and helping us better understand the place of the Divine Comedia in art.
