Prof. Dr. Kemal GÜRBÜZ With the aim of exploring tectono-stratigraphy of Aydıncık and its surroundings within the Mid-Taurides and explaining the geological evolution of the Tauride belt by having some valuable field data; here, two tectonic units, which are overlain by Tertiary sediments and have tectonic contact relations each other and representing that were formed in different basinal settings regarding to their stratigraphy, rock type and structural properties, and, unconformably overlying carbonate sequences were defined in this study. These tectonic units are called the Geyikdağ Tectonic Units in the south and the Aladağ Tectonic units in the north. The carbonate sequences overlying these tectonic units have been examined as Mesozoic sediments in this study. 1 1 formations, which were deposited within the time period of Infra-Cambrian- upper Permian, were mapped in the Geyikdağ Tectonic units. These are called Sipahili, Hüdai, Çaltepe, Eğripınar, Hırmanh, Karayar, Sığırcık, Büyükeceli, Akdere, Korucuk and Kırtıldağı formations from bottom to the top. 4 formations, which were deposited within the time period of middle Devonian-lower Triassic, were distinguished in the Aladağ Tectonic Unit. These units from bottom to the top are called Gölboğazı, Dikenlidere, Dumlugöze and Mediova formations. These two tectonic units are overlain by Mesozoic carbonates with angular unconformity. All these units are covered by Miocene Derinçay and Mut formations with angular unconformity. Aladağ Tectonic Unit tectonically emplaced onto the Geyikdağ Tectonic Unit from the north during Triassic time in the study area. The study area is highly affected from intensive tectonism formed in response to the Alpine orogenesis during the late Cretaceous and following period, thus, the contact relationship between the tectonic units and the Mesozoic sediments are almost everywhere tectonic and partly internally thrusted, folded and imbricated. The structural evidence arised from this study demonstrates that the area has controlled by NW-SE trending compressional tectonic regime, hence, NE-SW trending thrust, reverse faults and fold axis occurred. The data obtained from the area shows that the first lithological units were deposited in the area during Infra-Cambrian-Cambrian period, and the time period of Ordovician is represented by an uplifted area. During the mid-late Paleozoic era, the area gained its carbonate platform characteristics. A compressional tectonic regime was effective during earlier stage of late Triassic time, followed by late Paleozoic carbonate platform rifting during late Triassic period.
