Eocene stratigraphy and benthic foraminifera of Bağlum-Kazan (NW Ankara) region

Doç. Dr. Güldemin DARBAŞThe study area is situated in the northwestern part of Ankara, between theBağlum and Kazan. The oldest unit of study area and its near vicinity is theMesozoic ophiolites and it is overlaid by Senozoic carbonates. The study has beencarried out in the Orhaniye formation which consists of sandstone, marl, intercalatinglimestone and clayey limestone.During the field work, 3 stratigraphic sections have been mesured where 51fossiliferous and weathered rock samples have also collected. 204 thin sections havebeen prepared. As a result of the examination of thin sections under the microscope,8 genera and 14 species are identified to characterize Middle and Upper Lutetiansystematically. Alveolina elliptica elliptica, A. elliptica nuttalli, A. cf. callosa, A. cf.tenuis, Asterigerina rotula , Orbitolites complanatus, Fabiania cassis,Gyroidinella magna, Sphaerogypsina globula, Assilina exponens, Nummulitesaturicus, N. beaumonti, N. millecaput and N. praeaturicus areplaced within the Middle and Upper Lutetian layers. Based on the identified benthicforaminifera, the biozones, SB 14 and SB 15 of Middle Lutetian and SB 16 of UpperLutetian, are determined. Due to assesment of lithological characteristics andbenthic foraminiferal content, it is concluded that the study area is formed under areefal environment.Key Words: Benthic foreminifera, biostratigraphy, biozone, Kazan-Bağlum,Lutetian.
