Turkish-American in the Vietnam war period in the scope of dependency theory

One of the most important academic debates in the International Relations discipline is the issue of the backwardness of societies. According to the western-centered approach, societies have lagged behind due to the flaws in their modernization processes. However, contrary to this opinion, addiction theories argue that the responsible of the backwardness of Eastern societies is westerners. Because the world market formed through colonialism has become a capitalist world system over time. This means that an order shaped by the exploitation of the environment by the developed capitalist center has been formed. Looking at the example of Vietnam in the scope of the thesis, a situation that confirms the addiction theorists stands out. Because Vietnam, which has been subjected to French colonialism for many years, has also been intervened by the USA when it has the potential to be a model for communism as an independent country. So Vietnam is not lagging behind; has been left behind. The Vietnam War was tried to be legitimized through the war against communism carried out by the USA at the global level. Because Washington argued that the communist models should be fought to avoid domino effect. In this context, it has been observed that the USA, which has been interested in Vietnam since Truman, has actually dealt with Vietnam more with world affairs. This situation has also led to a convergence in Turkish-American relations. Truman found in the help of the US aid to Turkey for the removal of the Soviet threat in the context of the doctrine has created great satisfaction in Ankara. Indeed, the ongoing process in Turkey, have benefited from the Marshall Aids, the United States many have concluded bilateral agreements, have been included in NATO, the United States has given the possibility of establishing military bases on its territory and many others have been integrated very size of the Western World. Eisenhower Doctrine in the Middle East after the interests of the United States who believe that overlapping interests, Turkey has tried to comply with American interests in many issues. This whole picture has led to an economic, political, military and cultural convergence between the two countries. However, there were also crises in bilateral relations. For example, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Johnson Letter deeply injured the sincerity of the relations and created great resentment in Ankara. Because of this process, which led to Turkey's security concerns tend to recognize that Western Bloc in the United States against non-symmetrical formation of a dependency relationship. So the United States as economic facilities, military, political and cultural relations as a result of the Washington administration, Turkey has tried to position the status of a semi-peripheral countries. In this thesis, Turkish-American relations during the Vietnam War period are examined by using the literature review.
