iiiABSTRACTMustafa YÜKSELMaster ThesisBaku-Ceyhan Oil Pipeline and Its Effects on Turkish EconomyAdvisor:Prof. Dr. Nevzat YOSMAOĞLUMarch-2006, 159 PagesIn this study, in the transportation of Caspian petrolium reserves to world oilmarkets via Turkey by pipelines, which have increasing importance after gainedindependence of Central Asian and South Caucassian countries on the coast ofCaspian Sea, and future effects on Turkish Economy were searched.In the first part, it is reminded that Caspian Petrolium Reserves weren?tdiscovered newly, these reserves have been used for ancient times and the region hasthe earliest petrolium industry. Afterwards it is pointed out the greatness of petroliumreserves in Caspian Sea Region, and its importance in the world?s petrolium marketsin point of the potantial of production and exportation, and also it searches the replyof the question that ?why was it depended upon exporting pipelines? in this part, andexplained all of the pipeline projects which connecting the region to internationalmarkets, with all their advantages and disadvantages.ivIn the second part, the determinative economic factors in the selection ofpetrolium pipelines by using the datums given in the first part were extensivelyexamined and the criterions preferring the Baku-Tiblisi-Ceyhan pipeline wasdetermined by comparising the pipeline projects. Becuse of preveleged importancemarket potantiality of Caspian petrolium, it was discussed in this chapter particularlyand distinctively.Possible effects of Baku-Tiblisi-Ceyhan Pipeline on Turkish Economy weresearched in the last cheapter. This cheapter also includes improvements and negativeeffects which will appear on the route of the pipeline. These effects were examinedtwo headlines as regional effects and geo-economic effects which explain economiccapability of Turkey in Euroasia.Eventually it was concluded that Baku-Tiblisi-Ceyhan and other pipelineprojects are vital for Turkish Economy and in terms of Turkey?s economic benefitson Euroasia geography.
