Abstract (EN)

The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly impacted individuals' lifestyles and social dynamics worldwide. This study examines the effects of the pandemic on urban traffic density and vehicle usage habits in Balıkesir, Turkey. Analyzing the changes in traffic dynamics during and after the pandemic provides a crucial framework for understanding how these shifts can inform future transportation policies. The study analyzes vehicle passage data from 19 signalized intersections in the central districts of Balıkesir during the pandemic period (2021-2022) and the post-pandemic period (2023-2024). Fluctuations in traffic density observed at these intersections were evaluated using linear regression models. The findings reveal a significant increase in private vehicle use and a corresponding decline in public transportation preferences. Furthermore, traffic flows in industrial zones, which continued to support economic activities, were less affected by the pandemic compared to commercial and social hubs, where traffic density significantly decreased. This research highlights the importance of data collected during the pandemic for sustainable traffic management and transportation planning. The study concludes by offering recommendations, such as adopting intelligent traffic systems, promoting environmentally friendly transportation modes, and enhancing the appeal of public transportation systems. The results are expected to contribute to the improvement of urban traffic dynamics and preparation for potential future crises.
