Use of Geographic Information Systems in Dam Planning Studies: Case Study on Elazığ Maden Durmuştepe Dam The planning phase consists of certain phases in dam projects. These phases can be considered as mapping, hydrology studies, soil drainage prestudy, agricultural economy accounts, geological prestudy, hydraulic calculations and economic analysis. GIS can be defined as a system that stores the characteristic data of the job and updates and delivers the data quickly and saves time in dams and weirs. This thesis study consists of five sections. In the first section, general information is given about the construction of high dam or small dams planning and GIS process. In the second section it is mentioned that, what is meant by GIS, what purpose it is used for and its benefits according to occupational areas. In the third section, it is mentioned how to plan and what care should be taken to the dam and ponds. In the fourth section, it is mentioned how the model of Durmuştepe Dam planning made. In the fifth section, Durmuştepe Dam planning and its design in the GIS software are explained in detail. Keywords: Dams, small dams, planning and design of dams, GIS, ArcGIS.
