Investigation of childhood traumas and cognitive emotion regulation skills of obese individuals who decided to have bariatric surgery

This study was conducted to examine the childhood traumas and cognitive emotion regulation skills of obese individuals who decided to have bariatric surgery in terms of sociodemographic variables. The study is a descriptive study conducted with 153 obese individuals who applied to General Surgery 1 and 2 outpatient clinics. In the collection of data in this study; 'Sociodemographic Information Form', which includes the descriptive characteristics of individuals, 'Childhood Traumas Scale' to determine childhood traumas, and 'Cognitive Emotion Regulation Scale' to examine their ability to regulate their mood were used. Data were collected from obese individuals who applied to the General Surgery outpatient clinic by face-to-face interviews on appropriate days of the week. In the findings of our study, in the examination of childhood traumas and cognitive emotion regulation skills of obese individuals who decided to have bariatric surgery according to sociodemographic variables, according to gender; 'Focus on Thought' (p<0.05), according to whom they live with; 'Sexual Abuse' (p<0.05), according to income level perception; 'Emotional Abuse (p<0.05), 'Physical Neglect' (p<0.05), 'Focus on Thought' (p<0.05), 'Destruction' (p<0.01), increased desire to eat depends on the situation; 'Emotional Neglect' (p<0.05), 'Self Blame' (p<0.05), 'Acceptance' (p<0.05) were found to vary. At the end of the study, recommendations for the prevention of obesity in individuals were presented. Key words: Obesity, Bariatric Surgery, Childhood Trauma, Cognitive Emotion Regulation.
