Abstract (EN)

The presence of Turkish cultural, social, and linguistic elements in the Balkans extends back several centuries. Historical records indicate that Turks established a significant presence in Macedonia during the Ottoman era, contributing to the region's cultural, social, and economic fabric. During Ottoman rule, Turkish communities in the region had access to education in their native language. However, following the disintegration of the Empire, Turkish education in Macedonia began to decline rapidly due to political transitions and systemic restrictions. After the Ottoman withdrawal—following nearly 550 years of rule—Turks remaining in Macedonia faced increasing difficulties in accessing mother-tongue education. Throughout various political periods, including the pre- and post-Balkan Wars, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the Socialist Federal Republic of Macedonia, and the Republic of North Macedonia, Turkish-language education was intermittently restricted or altogether banned. Political and social pressures led to the marginalization of Turkish education, resulting in its deterioration and, at times, complete suspension. This study was conducted in response to the academic need to examine the historical trajectory of Turkish-language education in Macedonia, as has been done in other Balkan countries. Fieldwork was carried out in North Macedonia, and data were collected through site visits, online resources, archival materials, and interviews with relevant individuals. The study investigates the development of Turkish education from its inception to the present, while analyzing both the advancements achieved and the obstacles encountered. The aim of this research is to identify key challenges faced in Turkishlanguage education, propose viable solutions, and draw scholarly attention to these issues in order to contribute to future academic discussions and policymaking. Keywords: North Macedonia, Turks, Turkish, mother tongue, education, Turkish education.
