Today, the microbiological safety of cosmetic products is of great importance in terms of both consumer health and product shelf life. Among the sterilization methods used to prevent microbial contamination, gamma irradiation stands out as an effective and residue-free technique. Gamma rays are particularly preferred for the sterilization of powder-form cosmetic raw materials due to their high penetration ability and applicability at low temperatures. In this study, azelaic acid raw materials, which is commonly used in the cosmetic industry, were sterilized using gamma radiation. The paramagnetic centers and dosimetric properties formed as a result of irradiation were evaluated using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The effects of gamma rays on the crystal structure and radical formation were investigated to assess both the sterilization efficiency and the chemical changes induced in the azelaic acid material.This research sheds light on the safe sterilization of cosmetic raw materials while highlighting the effectiveness of EPR spectroscopy in radiation dose monitoring and paramagnetic characterization Keywords: Gamma radiation, Sterilization, EPR spectroscopy, Paramagnetic centers
