Analyzing of skill-based mathematics questions in terms of values education and evaluating them in the context of teacher opinions

The aim of this study is to examine skill-based Mathematics questions in terms of values education and to determine the views of Mathematics teachers in this context. Values are tried to be acquired by students through various methods, techniques, tools and materials in education. In line with the objectives of the curricula, one of the tools for gaining values is skill-based exam questions that measure students' reading comprehension, interpretation, inference, problem solving, analysis, critical thinking, scientific process and similar skills. Along with these skills, it is seen that questions measuring students' skills related to their daily lives are included. Considering that the concept of value has an important place in our lives, it is important that students encounter values in skill-based questions. Document analysis method was used to investigate skill-based questions of LGS exams related to values. Twenty-one Mathematics teachers working in secondary schools in Manisa province, selected through purposive sampling, participated in the study. A semi-structured interview form was used as a data collection tool to examine the opinions of mathematics teachers. The data were analyzed using content analysis technique. The findings of the study revealed that 62 value sentences were identified in 120 skill-based questions asked in LGS exams between 2018 - 2023. With 11 value sentences, patriotism was the most common value. The 2019 questions included the most value sentences with 16 values. In addition, according to teacher opinions, patriotism and responsibility values are mostly included in the questions. Teachers stated that skill-based questions should be associated with the core values in the Mathematics curriculum. It is seen that justice, honesty, respect and patriotism are the root values that teachers want to be included most in skill-based questions.
