Investigation of Behçet Necatigil's poems in terms of semantics

Poetry is an art, which is realized with language and whose material is the language. Studying the language in poetry analysis is important for understanding and evaluating the art of poetry, poetry and the artist who performed it. Language is a system based on the transmission of meanings. Semantics is a discipline that deals with all the meaning-related features of language signs. In this study, the poems of Behçet Necatigil, one of the important poets of the Republican Period, are discussed in terms of various titles of semantics. Relations of meaning between words, figurative meanings and formulaic language units are the main topics of study. The aim of the study is to determine some meaning characteristics of the poems of Necatigil and to reveal how he used the semantic features of the language while performing the art of the poet. In the explanation of the subject titles, his poetics, which came out with his articles he compiled in his book "Bile / Yazdı, Yazılar" (Düzyazılar I)" and his views in the interviews and conference speeches in his book "Konuşmalar, Konferanslar" (Düzyazılar II) were used. Our study consists of three chapters. In the first chapter, which deals with the relations of meaning between words, Necatigil's poems are dealt with in terms of "homonymy and polysemy", "antonymy" and "conceptual field" titles. In the first chapter, focuses on how these semantic features of language are effective in the rhetoric (such as cinas, tevriye, tenasüp ) as well as in the innovative uses of the poet. Although these verbal arts were frequently used in divan literature, they lost their influence in the Republic Period. Despite this, Necatigil benefited from them in his art. The subject of the second chapter is trope. In this chapter, where used Nizamettin Ugur's classification for tropes is used, "simile", "metaphor", "allusion", "antiphrasis", which are based on sampling, and "metonymy" and "quantification" which are based on holisticity on the examples in Necatigil's poems are classified. The third chapter is the section on the formulaic language units in Necatigil's poems. Idioms, proverbs and formulaic expressions in poems were determined. This chapter is closely related to the style of the poet approaching the language of speech. In this study, 761 poems of Necatigil were scanned under these titles. During the sampling, it was deemed appropriate to give the names of some poems and the page numbers in which they were included in the source book in order not to repeat the samples, only the lines related to the subject title were quoted. Within the same subject title, only a certain part of the repetitive or very similar examples in poems are included.
