Determination of psychometric properties of the Turkish form of Modified Engulfment Scale for schizophrenia patients

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine psychometric properties of the Turkish form of Modified Engulfment Scale. Method: This relational study was conducted with 162 schizophrenia patients in Antalya province Akdeniz University Psychiatry Daytime Hospital between November 2017 and July 2018. For performing the study, permission was received from the author who developed the scale via email, approval from the ethics committee, and written consent from the participants. Data were collected with Personal Information Form and Modified Engulfment Scale. The original form of Modified Engulfment Scale consists of 30 items in 5 Likert type without subdimensions. Data were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient method. Results: Factor construct of the scale was tested with exploratory factor analysis, and the Turkish form of the scale was evaluated as a 3-factor construct with 25 questions. Extra evidence was obtained for three-factor construct of the scale using confirmatory factor analysis. Three-factor construct includes change, believe in treatment, and future expectation subdimensions. As a result of Pearson product-moment, low and moderate correlation coefficients were obtained between subscales, and moderate and high correlation coefficients were achieved between the subscales and total score of the scale. Internal consistency reliability coefficients were found as .86, .63., .66 and .86 for change, believe in treatment, and future expectation and total scale, respectively. Stability factors obtained with test-retest were found as .80, .54, .81 and .83 for change, believe in treatment, and future expectation and total scale, respectively. Conclusion: It was found that the Turkish form of Modified Engulfment Scale has three-factor construct as change, believe in treatment, and future expectation, and as the result of psychometric measurements, the scale was found to be applicable for schizophrenia patients in Turkish population.
