Abstract (EN)
This thesis study includes the large dictionary known as the Manchu Polyglot Dictionary (Pentaglot Dictionary), in which five different languages are discussed comparatively during the Qing (Qing, 1664-1912) Dynasty, which was established by the Manchus in China. The dictionary was completed in the 18th century, and a comprehensive study was carried out on the work for the first time in Germany in 2013, and the dictionary items including five languages were transcribed. Since the dictionary is very voluminous, we only worked on a part of it about plants as the subject of the thesis. In our thesis, the plant section and sub-items in this section are discussed comparatively. In addition, brief information is given about the work and the period in which it was written. This dictionary, which is called Yu- Zhi Wu-Ti-Qing-Wen- Jian in Chinese, and òanniñ fütükän beş úısmi úoşúan òät Mancu sözniñ ayrí mäcín òäti in Uyghur Turkish (Five Language Dictionary Written by Han), has prepared in five languages which are Machu, Tibetan, Mongol, Uyghur and Chinese. The words were classified according to the categories that make up the content of the sections, not in alphabetical order. The words corresponding to the Uyghur plant names in chapter 28-31 of the dictionary constitutes the subject of our thesis. The name of these chapters are arranged as; Chapter 28-Fruits Section (mivalarniñ ser cemi, p. 3958- 3985), Chapter 29-Herb Section (otniñ ser cemi, p. 3986- 4017), Chapter 30-Trees Section (daraòtniñ ser cemi p. 4018- 4076), Chapter 31-Flowers Section (gülniñ ser cemi p. 4077- 412). Also, there are chapters added later to the original copy in addition to the main chapters. We did not include these chapters in our thesis. In this thesis, the methods in study "Auf Kaiserlichen Befehl Erstelltes Wöterbuch des Manjurischen in fünf Sprachen Fünfsprachenspiegel" prepared under the leadership of Oliver Corff in Germany, are used. The transcription of the plant names in the dictionary has been prepared by making comprehensive explanations where necessary. In addition to the Latin alphabet transcription of each word, the Arabic letter form in the original text and the pronunciation of the Manchu and Chinese transcripts are also included. Sometimes, it has been tried to add the Mongolian versions of the words that show phonetic similarity in the plant names, and the Latin versions of the majority of the plant names. The aims of the study are to introduce this dictionary which was prepared during the Manchu Dynasty in China which is known in the field of Turcology but not much studied in Turkey, to give information about the physical structure and content of the work, to make a transcriptional analysis of the four sections we have chosen, and contributing to existing studies in the literature. In our thesis, Uyghur Plant Names (herbs, trees, fruits and flowers names) are examined in detail. Although some plant names consist of Manchu translations of meaning and sound, we focused on understanding the derivation of plant names of Turkish origin, how they were formed, which names continue to be used in the same way in today's Turkey Turkish, and tried to convey our findings on these issues. We hope that the study will be useful for the historical comparison of plant names in Turkish culture between dialects.
