Turkish terms in doctoral theses in computer engineering

Terms are words which are used in their literal meanings, referring to particular concepts related to a scientific field, an art branch or a profession, existing in the vernacular at the same time due to their area of usage. In all walks of life, especially in education, the only way to comprehend the concepts and their details in a scientific field is possible through translating terms into Turkish. The field of terminology was created to derive specific words used in certain specialities. As innovations enter our lives very rapidly and terms hold a very significant place in education, words that have been derived in the field of terminology enables the development and progression of language. With the rapid development of technology, the science of terminology is a branch of science that needs to be meticulously focused on to save the Turkish language from the invasion of foreign words. Studies in this area should be carried out continuously and regularly. Glossaries which can be used as sources of reference should be created in the field of terminology. Nowadays, developments taking place in science and technical fields greatly affect the evolution of Turkish language. Manufacturers offer new technological products to the market as they are named in their own language. It is exactly at this point that terminology should come into play, which brings out its blended quality. It would be possible to protect our language and enrich its vocabulary by deriving words from the already-existing and widely known word roots and functional suffixes. At the same time, introducing Turkish terms to the Turkish language would be a crucial support to its progression as a language of science. This study draws inferences on terms in informatics by examining the progress during the creation of Turkish terms. The study focuses on the level of adoption of Turkish terms used in the doctoral theses in computer engineering and the usage of Turkish terms in this field of study. The study aims to showcase the competency of Turkish as a language of science, and shed light on the development of Turkish in the scientific field. The study compares the terms used in scientific papers, describes how the terms in computer engineering were created, looks at the adoption rates of those terms and the level of Turkish terms used in those papers. Generally, the studies in terminology take the form of glossary research. By analysing the terms in informatics, it can be observed that the researchers in the field endeavour to use Turkish correctly and translate the terms adopted from other languages into Turkish. Among the objectives of this study is to act as an example to all scientific fields for similar applications by demonstrating the results of the efforts in translation of terms into Turkish in one scientific field.
