A systematic review study on cognitive neuroscience and mathematics education

Abstract (EN)
In this study, it is aimed to systematically examine and evaluate the academic studies published internationally between January 2010 and March 2020 on mathematics education and cognitive neuroscience . The sample group of this study, which was carried out with the method of systematic compilation, consists of articles published at an international level and in Turkish or English as the publication language. During the study, scanning was carried out by adhering to the PRISMA protocol. A search was carried out on the four most preferred search engines in the field of educational sciences. These; They are Google Scholar, Eric, Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science. Through the databases, 2610 scan results were found, the ones that were not accessible were tried to be reached, the unreachable ones and the ones obtained from different databases (duplications) were eliminated and the research continued with 895 studies. Each of the 895 articles identified in the study were examined and pre-selection/inclusion criteria were determined jointly with expert opinion. The criteria for inclusion/exclusion of studies in the research are as follows: 1. Selected studies were taken only within the specified date ranges. 2. The fact that the studies have a summary part and that directly parallels the study problem are included in this part. 3. Studies involving concepts such as literacy in the mother tongue, finger counting, and mathematical difficulty were excluded. 4. Studies with examples such as learning difficulties, dyscalculia-dyslexia, and hyperactivity were excluded. 5. Book chapters, master's and doctoral dissertations are excluded, but articles created from such academic studies are included. 6. Care was taken to include the method/method part of the studies to be included. Studies that are not included in the method part as subtitles are excluded. Within the framework of the specified screening criteria, the coding and categorization phase of the research was started with 64 articles. During the coding phase, holistic readings of 64 articles were made. At this stage, the focus is on the findings, discussion and conclusion parts of the studies. In the transition from coding to categories, 4 sub-categories were determined. These; 1. Physiological Cohesion in the Specific of Mathematical Transference 2. Applicable Education Methods for Mathematics Education and Neuroscience 3. Brain Imaging And Mathematically Neurocognitive Mechanisms 4. An Investigation of Neuroscience Studies on the Affective Bases of Mathematics Learning. While studies were included in the themes from the categories, in the discussion and conclusion sections, the studies that reached findings outside the field of mathematics education and independent of this field and the articles that compared the previous article of the same author in the process were not included in the analysis stage. After the elimination at this stage, the research continued with 24 studies. After the data screening stage, themes were created in the light of the determined categories, and expert opinion was taken at this stage. These themes are; 1. Examination of neuroscience studies on the cognitive and affective bases of mathematics learning 2. Examination of existing studies in the context of mathematical automaticity, fluency, and retrieval strategies 3. It is the examination of neuroscience and mathematics education studies in terms of gaining mathematical skills and developmental changes. Descriptive analysis and content analysis methods were preferred as data analysis methods, and the data were examined in depth. The prominent findings as a result of the analyzes are as follows; The selected data were mostly published in 2019 (the search was carried out until March 2020, but the data in 2020 could not be included in the data set because they did not meet the criteria of the study), the word 'arithmetic' was the highest in terms of keyword density, and the most published countries were the United States of America. In terms of sample sizes of the studies, 8 to 246 participants were studied, and the youngest 8 and the oldest 29 were seen as participant age groups. 23 of the articles included in the study are in English and 1 in Turkish. Studies intense as secondary and undergraduate students were chosen as the sample group. Quantitative research method has been the most frequently preferred research method in studies. Among the research designs, the experimental method has been the research design preferred by the researchers. In these studies conducted in the field of mathematics education and cognitive neuroscience, brain functions are generally examined in the context of learning mathematical knowledge or in the context of using and retrieval of learned knowledge. In this study, which will contribute to the literature, a compilation of international interdisciplinary studies on cognitive neuroscience and mathematics education, which are alternative education paths, will be presented to educational scientists and those who are interested in this field. In the light of this research, it is suggested that cognitive neuroscience and neuro-education studies should be emphasized in our country, and that clinical studies should be given importance.
