Investigation of the relationship between parental attidues gender roles and personality characteristics of the adolescents from a school sample

The goal of this research was to investigate the relationship of perceived parental attitudes, gender roles and personality characteristics of adolescents between 12 and 17 years of age. Data was collected from 226 girls and 151 boys (377 students in the total) from a secondary school and two high schools in Hakkari. To evaluate the perceived parentals attitudes, a Parentals Attitude Scale, to evaluate their personality structure Five Factor Personality Scale and to evaluate adolescents' gender roles BEM Gender Role Inventory and to get sociodemographic information, a form developed by the investigator were used. Perceived authoritative parental attitudes were higher in girls compared to boys. As a sub – dimension of Five Factor Personality Scale, neuroticism and open mindedness were higher in girls compared to boys. There was a positive correlation between sub – dimension of sexual roles and authoritative and democratic parental attitudess. There was also a positive correlation between the level of masculine gender role of adolescents and sub-dimensions of five factor personality scale (open mindedness, neuroticism, responsibility and extroversion). Also there was a positive correlation between extroversion and democratic parentals attitudes. A positive correlation was also found between neuroticism and fosterprotective/demanding parental attitudes Taking the relation of parental attitudes with adolesents' personality characteristics into consideration, parental attitudes could be part of the therapeutic work with families.
