The perception of physical detection in nurses working in intensive care in a university hospital for elderly patients

Abstract (EN)

The study conducted to evaluate the perceptions of nurses working in intensive care units regarding the practice of physical restraint in elderly patients is descriptive and cross-sectional. Nurses working in intensive care units of Çukurova University Balcalı Hospital Health Practice and the Research Center has formed the universe of research. No sample selection was made in the research, but It was completed with 142 nurses who agreed to participate in the study. Information Form and the Detection Use Perception Questionnaire created by researcher were used in collecting data. In evaluating the data, percentages, mean, "Mann-Whitney U" test (Z-table value), with measurement values of three or more independent groups "Kruskal-Wallis H" test was used for comparison. In the study, ıt was determined that the avarage of PRUQ(Perceptions of Restraint Use Questionnaire) scores of nurses working in intensive care units is 4.21±0.35 and nurses' perception of use of physical restraint in the elderly patients is high. It was determined that there was a statistically significant difference between Intensive care units where nurses work and levels of intensive care units worked in and PRUQ scores. Between age groups of nurses working in intensive care units and their PRUQ scores was determined meaningful relationship as statistically, negatively and very weakly. It has been observed that nurses working in intensive care units use physical restraint practice in the care of elderly patients to provide security of patients. As a result of the research, It was observed that nurses working in intensive care units have a high perception of physical restraint practice for elderly patients, and their education level on physical restraint practice is low.It may be suggested that training plans for nurses working in intensive care units for physical restraint practice in the care of elderly patients should be created, and practice guides and guidelines should be created.
