Birleşmiş Milletler'in Batı Afrika'daki barışıkoruma operasyonlarının değerlendirilmesi

The United Nations (UN) has taken initiative in the resolution processes of both inter-state and intra-state conflicts since its establishment in 1945. The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of the UN peacekeeping operations deployed between 1993 and 2018 in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Cote d'Ivoire, all of which are located in Mano River basin sub-region of West Africa. The six peacekeeping missions mentioned in the three case studies aimed at solving intrastate conflicts triggered by several factors such as ethnic diversities and lack of economic, political and social infrastructures. The UN peacekeeping missions under focus are namely, UNOMIL and UNMIL in Liberia, UNOMSIL and UNAMSIL in Sierra Leone, and MINUCI and UNOCI in Cote d'Ivoire. The case studies were analysed on the basis of theoretical and historical framework and the information gathered from the sources provided by the UN in the first place. The contributions of the major regional organisation, ECOWAS and its military arm, ECOMOG were also taken into account to reach an objective conclusion. It can be concluded that the UN peacekeeping operations in these three case studies were overall effective as they met the primary objectives of the UN operations such as the maintenance of a peaceful atmosphere accompanied with the reconstruction of economic, political and social infrastructures in relevant war-torn countries.
