Examination of opinions of biology teachers about laboratory proficiency according to different variables (Diyarbakır province example)

In this study, it was aimed to examine biology teachers' opinions about laboratory competences according to different variables. The universe of the research is composed of biology teachers working in 34 secondary education institutions in Diyarbakır province center and laboratory. For the quantitative part of the study, the sample was not selected because the universe was complete, while the qualitative part was carried out with 11 teachers chosen by sampling. The data required for this research, which was carried out in the mixed case and case study model, were collected through the "Laboratory Qualification Determination Scale" and the interviews with the teachers. The pre-treatment reliability (cronbach alpha) coefficient of the prepared scale was found to be 0.892. Analysis of the data was carried out by means of the SPSS analysis program and the analysis was based on percentage, frequency, independent sample t-test, one way variance analysis (ANOVA) and Scheffe test of multiple comparison tests. The results obtained based on the quantitative and qualitative findings of the study can be summarized as follows: 1. Biology teachers find laboratory method important. 2. Biology teachers' opinions about laboratory competencies are low. 3. Biology teachers' gender affects their views on laboratory competences. Male teachers' proficiency opinions are higher than female teachers. 4. Biology teachers' opinions about laboratory competencies do not affect the variables of higher education institutions and service years they graduate. 5. School type variable influences the opinions of biology teachers about lab competencies. The proficiency of teachers working in science high schools is higher than teachers working in other school types.
