Abstract (EN)
Since their establishment the Sasanian Empire engaged in intense struggles with the Roman Empire and continued to threaten the eastern border during the reign of Justin II. When he ascended the throne in 565, the emperor, who had held an important position as Curopalates in his youth, adopted a different political stance from the policies of his predecessor Justinian I. He inherited an empire fraught with internal and external threats, and during his rule he first resorted to diplomacy to end the Sasanian problem on the eastern border of the state. However, these efforts were obstructed by Khosrow I, the Shahanshah of the Sasanians at the time. Realizing that diplomacy would bot suffice, Justin II shifted to forming alliances and adopting defensive strategies to counter the Sasanian threat. He collaborated with the Göktürks, who had gained influence along the Silk Road and were at odds with the Sasanians over conflicting interests. Shortly after this alliance was established. Armenians in Persarmenia planned a rebellion against the Sasanians and sought assistance from the Roman Empire. This development provided Justin II with the opportunity he had been seeking to eliminate the Sasanian threat. The rebellion of the Christian Armenians was successful, and Justin II ordered an offensive against the Sassanids. However, Maurice's siege of Nisibis failed due to the irresponsible behavior of Acacius, who came with the order of Justin II, and then the Sassanids, chasing the dispersed Roman army, captured the city of Dara with an intense siege. The war between the two empires significantly changed the balance in the region.
