Determination of nutritional and elemental compositions of some marine species catched from Bozcaada

In this study, proximate composition, fatty acid profile and metal contents of wild fish speciments sarpa (Sarpa salpa), coral (Pagrus major), dentex (Dentex dentex), sea bream (Sparus aurata), sargoz (Diplodus sargus), melanur (Oblada melanura), gray mullet (Chelon auratus), mullet (Mullus barbatus), red mullet (Scomber japonicus) and squid (Loligo vulgaris) collected around Bozcaada Island were studied. To evaluate the potential health risk arising from the consumption of species for 1, 3 and 5 days a week, estimated weekly intake (Estimated Weekly Intake, EWI), target hazard quotient (THQ), lifetime cancer risk (The Life time) cancer risk (CR) and maximum permissible consumption limit (CRlim) values were calculated. It was observed that almost all species showed a higher nutritional value in biochemistry content and fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA. Almost all species differed in concentrations of the elements Ca, K, Mg, Na, P, Cr, Fe, Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn, V, Se, Cd, As and Hg. EWI were compared with provisional weekly intake tolerance (PTWI) values. Given individuals' body weights, weekly intake limits for Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Hg, Ni, Cr, Cd and As elements were found 8750, 392000, 68600, 21000-70000, 280, 350000, 147000, 437.5, and 1050 (µg/kg) for adults, respectively; while it was determined as 4000, 179200, 31360, 9600-32000, 128, 160000, 67200, 200and 480 (µg/kg), respectively in children. It was thought that as the frequency of consumption of the studied species by children and adults increases, the seasonal THQ value may pose a risk for Ni and Hg elements. When the CR values of 10 species consumed seasonally by adults and children for 1, 3 and 5 days a week were examined, it was assessed that they may pose a carcinogenic risk depending on the amount of consumption, since Cr, Cd and iAs elements exceed the value of 10-05. The element arsenic is limiting factor due to its CRlim value in all seasons and species and that it may pose a carcinogenic risk if the studied species are consumed.
