Özet (EN)
This work explores the representation of women in the early Egyptian cinema during the silent film era. Despite the limited availability of sources on the topic, the study analyzes the roles played by female filmmakers, producers, directors, and actresses in the early Egyptian film industry during the 1920s and 1930s. The research draws on primary sources, including films, contemporary documentaries, newspapers, and magazines, as well as secondary sources, to examine the cultural and societal factors that shaped the portrayal of women in Egyptian cinema. The study argues that the representation of women in early Egyptian cinema was shaped by traditional values and social norms that restricted women's roles and activities in public life. Nonetheless, female filmmakers and actresses challenged these norms by producing and directing their own films and portraying strong female characters on the screen. This research sheds light on the contributions of Egyptian women to the early film industry and their efforts to break free from societal constraints and gender stereotypes. This study aims to explore the participation of women in the early Egyptian film industry during the 1920s and 1930s and how their roles were portrayed in the accounts of the history of Egyptian cinema. It also investigates the societal stigma and challenges faced by women who pursued careers in the film industry, particularly the stigmatization of acting as dishonorable for women. Through primary and secondary sources, the research analyzes the cultural and societal factors that shaped the portrayal of women in Egyptian cinema during the early 20th century. Despite the film industry's significant impact on the country's cultural identity, economy, and arts, societal norms and cultural beliefs viewed acting as dishonorable, especially for women. These norms were reinforced by the state and media and further exacerbated by discrimination based on class hierarchy, gender roles, religious beliefs, and orientalism. Keywords: Early Egyptian cinema, Women's representation, Gender stereotypes, Societal norms, Stigmatization of the film industry
