Abstract (EN)

"Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Activities of Bromelain", Trakya University, Institute of Health Sciences, Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences, Master Thesis, Edirne, 2024. İntroduction and Purpose : Bromelain is a mixture of enzymes found in the crude extract obtained by various methods from the fruit and other parts of the Ananas comosus (Pineapple) plant, belonging to the Bromeliaceae family. Bromelain is used in various industrial, food and textile fields, as well as in medicine, pharmacy and cosmetics, as a phytotherapeutic agent, due to its broad therapeutic effects and lack of serious side effects, as it is easy to obtain, provides high efficiency, is a non-toxic compound and exhibits a wide effect profile. It is also used in fields. Biyofilms, formed by microorganisms of the same or different species, are resistant to antibiotics and have antiphagocytic effects, and are often held responsible for chronic infections that are difficult to treat and problems experienced in industrial areas. This study aimed to examine the antimicrobial effect of bromelain and its effects on biofilm formation. Material and Methods : Trakya University Faculty of Pharmacy Pharmaceutical Microbiology Quality control strains and clinical isolates obtained from the culture collection of the Department were used. Isolates with biofilm-forming properties were detected. The antimicrobial effect of bromelain was determined by the microdilution method. The antibiofilm effect of biofilm-forming isolates in the presence and absence of bromelain was determined and compared. Results : The highest MIC value of bromelain is 10000 µg/ml and the lowest MIC value is 625 µg/ml was detected as. As a result of the studies, 12 (41,37%) isolates showed no antibiofilm effect after treatment with bromelain, while 17 (58,62%) showed antibiofilm effects. Conclusion : It was determined that bromelain reduced the degree of biofilm formation of microorganisms. In view of these results, combined drug treatments or food supplements of bromelain should not be used. It can be said that its us emay be a new alternative in terms of providing new approaches to treatments. Keywords: Bromelain, antimicrobial activity, biofilm, antibiofilm activity
