Geological investigation of Bucak (Karaisali) and its near surroundings area and utilization with in the railway route concept

This study comprises the investigation of stratigraphic properties of the formations cropped out around Bucak village and its near surroundings in the southwest of Karaisalı town in Adana. Permo-Carboniferous aged Karahamzauşağı formation which crop out due to Çokak Fault in a very limited area in the study area form the basement rocks underneath the well investigated Tertiary rock units. Transgressively Lower-Middle Miocene age Kaplankaya and Karaisalı formations, Middle Miocene age Güvenç Formation and Upper Miocene age Kuzgun formation, rest on the Palaeozioc basement with angular unconformity and Quaternary alluviums and terrace conglomerates unconformably covers all the older units. Kaplankaya and Karaisalı formations, which unconformably overlie the basement and present reef environment characteristics, have transitional contacts eachother. Karaisalı formation which was build by especially reef organisms has an important source for the stone quarries. Fine grained sediments such as claystone-siltstone and partially fine grained sanstones of Güvenç Formation conformably covers the Miocene reef carbonates. It is determinated that this unit deposited fore reef and partially in deep marine environment. The Kuzgun Formation which starts with cross bedded pebble stone-pebbly sandstones of meandering river sediments pass upward into sandstone-mudstone alternations. The upper part is represented by shallow marine-beach sandstone and to the top reef lenses less than 10 meter thicknes have been observed to the top part of the unit. Quaternary alluviums and terrace conglomerates unconformably rest on all older units.Key words : Adana Basin, Stratigraphy, Railway route
